A perfect view of righteousness
condemns us—each and every one.
It’s easy to deflect or to justify
or minimize my sin; to judge others
worse than myself. But under the weight
of God’s true light, I am ruined
Love, God and fellow man, two simple commands
Held up to the law, I cannot stand
I’ve broken every one. Even my best
efforts have failed, defiled by my
sinful heart. Who can stand before you
oh God, what hope has sinful man?
We covet your position; in an excuse
to harm our neighbors, we call our evil good,
Your good evil. Oh who can save us?
Love, God and fellow man, two simple commands
Even your simplest commands we
do not keep, but there is good news.
While we were still sinners Christ died
for us, bore our sin upon the cross.
He rose so we could be justified, restored
to God. No longer cursed, not ashamed.
Love, God and fellow man, two simple commands
